Soviet chronicle devoted to Academician Trofim Lysenko, director of the Institute of Experimental Biology, who pioneered to use a totalitarian state to suppress all research in genetics for almost three decades (1935-1965). The term "Lysenkoism" denotes a very dangerous phenomenon: an effort to suppress a field of research when it conflicts with a dominant political agenda. Lysenko was just the most successful among party-sponsored pseudo-scientists (he and his supporters managed almost completely destroy the Russian genetic school in the name of Marxism). He wanted to prosper by serving as a political force. Several genetics who failed to accept the new cult were laid off, imprisoned, or even killed by authorities.
Lysenko, ideological shepherd of Soviet geneticists, announced that Soviet agrobiologists can even turn wheat into rye. All they have to do is plant wheat in places where the climate is tough for it. The video shows Lysenko demonstrating his agricultural achievements, combine harvester gathering wheat, modified plants in greenhouse, melons cultivated in Moscow. The voice-over glorifies Lysenko and the success of Soviet agronomy.
